About Tacoma
Tacoma is a diverse, international community of 201,700 residents and is the second largest city in the Puget Sound region and the third largest in the state of Washington. Tacoma is located 32 miles south of Seattle, 31 miles north of our state capital, Olympia, and 18 miles south of Sea-Tac International Airport.
Tacoma became known as the City of Destiny in 1887 after it was designated as the Northern Pacific Railroad's western terminus in 1873. Scores of immigrants flocked to Tacoma, and now as Tacoma undergoes a thriving renaissance, we’re seeing another surge of immigration as residents and investors flock to this great Western Washington destination. Tacoma has again emerged as the urban heart of the South Puget Sound.
The story of Tacoma spans more than two centuries from the time Captain George Vancouver anchored off the north shore of Tacoma in 1792. In 1870, Tacoma became a destination for the Northern Pacific Railroad because of its natural deep-water port, when it made Tacoma a stop on its transcontinental line. The railroad platted New Tacoma and the growth of this Western Washington city began.
Old Tacoma and New Tacoma merged in 1884 and incorporated as Tacoma. By 1890, the population reached 36,000 people. Sawmills, coal mines, flour mills and a smelter turned raw materials into exportable goods. Tacoma continues to make use of both its land and sea resources. It is home to the Port of Tacoma, the seventh-largest container port in the United States, and it’s near the Sea-Tac International Airport and just 36 miles from the city of Seattle.
Today Tacoma is a thriving city with a revitalized downtown that caters to residents and visitors alike with its shopping, dining, theaters and award-winning arts and architecture. Tacoma is a wonderful city that benefits greatly from the local business community. Honda of Fife works hard to satisfy the automotive needs of its customers in Tacoma.
